                                                  (Phonetic for scooters)

Vietnam is in constant growth as part of one of the emerging economies in South Eats Asia. It has almost 90 million inhabitants, 70% of which live in rural areas, and 37 million motorbikes. Hanoi, the capital and the second largest city in Vietnam, has 6.5 million inhabitants and an everyday millions of people use their motorbikes to go from one place to another at rush hour.

One can tell that more than half of the drivers are women through their clothes. A particular jacket, with an extension to cover the head and hands covers almost the entire body. However, pollution is not the only reason that makes them hide their skin. Women protect themselves from the sun serving local beauty stereotypes. Vietnamese women are by nature-tanned skin and have slanted eyes, but they strive to be white.

In Vietnam being light skinned is considered to be a synonym for a good economical status, while being tanned denotes a low socioeconomic status, having a work in rural areas or spending hours outdoors. All kinds of accessories and 'solutions' for sun protection, such as skin bleaching creams, have been created. This series of portraits hides a complex social reality: the pressure to which women are subjected in order to follow the standards of beauty imposed by the West, including the color of the skin as a symbol of status and social position.

All the images that comprise this series were made to motorcyclists while they were driving the streets of Hanoi.

                                                  MOTOBAIK
