A woman takes part in a ritual in honor of Iemanjá.
Iemanjá forms part of religious syncretism in South America. The belief in the goddess comes from Umbanda; a blend of religions that include African; Catholicism and Spiritism.Iemanja; or Jemanjá; also called Yemanyá is a female Orisha from the Yoruba pantheon originated in Nigeria and translated to America in the period of the slave trade; together with the rest of their religions and customs. Umbanda worships Yemanjá as one of the seven Orixás. She is the Queen of the Ocean; the patron spirit of the fishermen and the survivors of shipwrecks; the feminine principle of creation; and the spirit of moonlight.
Syncretism is the combining of different beliefs, while blending practices of various schools of thought. Syncretism involves the merging or assimilation of several originally discrete traditions, especially in the theology.
