Iemanjá forms part of religious syncretism in South America. The belief in the goddess comes from Umbanda; a blend of religions that include African; Catholicism and Spiritism.Iemanja; or Jemanjá; also called Yemanyá is a female Orisha from the Yoruba pantheon originated in Nigeria and translated to America in the period of the slave trade; together with the rest of their religions and customs. Umbanda worships Yemanjá as one of the seven Orixás. She is the Queen of the Ocean; the patron spirit of the fishermen and the survivors of shipwrecks; the feminine principle of creation; and the spirit of moonlight.
